Vision and Goals

Vision for Alumni and Donor Relations

Georgetown University stands on the threshold of implementing the most ambitious and forward-looking campaign in its long and distinguished history, one that will inspire a broad range of support by:

  • Articulating a vision of what Georgetown can do to improve the human condition, not just what donors can do for Georgetown
  • Demonstrating how its considerable human assets relate to the greatest human needs, current and evolving
  • Engaging donors in dialogue about lasting innovation and fundamental problem solving rather than reducing the exercise to the application of mere fund-raising tactics in pursuit of “more”
  • Mobilizing the incalculable talents of the extended Georgetown community-- students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, friends, foundations and corporations –in the name of common cause and higher purpose

We are accomplished and conscientious professionals from various walks of life who are to continuing to build a culture of true philanthropy. That culture, we believe, entails:

  • The setting of rigorous but attainable standards, not the imposition of unreasonable expectations, unmanageable portfolios, or arbitrary metrics
  • The highest regard and respect for the donor made manifest in the language we use (avoiding terms like “suspects” and “targets”), the strategies we employ (such as interviewing our prospective donors to match their philanthropic objectives to our strategic aims rather than selling “wants” and “needs” derived solely from internal deliberations), and the stewardship that we provide at the receipt of every gift and long after it has been received
  • A high level of candor that encourages all staff members to share their struggles so as to never feel isolated and unsupported in pursuit of the unattainable
  • The creation of a continuous learning environment in which we learn from one another’s successes and setbacks
  • The constant reminder that if we conduct ourselves as agents of philanthropy, we will further the American revolution that annually transfers $250 billion from the hands of private donors to worthwhile causes, thereby advancing democratic ideals and ameliorating social ills
  • The unparalleled opportunity to work along side remarkable benefactors to ensure that this generation bequeaths to the next as much, if not more, than it inherited
