Parent and Family Giving

Dear Georgetown Parents and Families,

As both a proud alumnus and the University’s Vice President of Advancement, I want to welcome you and your family to our Georgetown family. Whether you are brand new to Georgetown or perhaps you’re already a part of the Hoya family—as an alum or parent of another Hoya—we are thrilled to have your child here, with us, as we enroll the class of 2027 and other first-year students.

In my role at the university, I work closely with all in the Georgetown community, including parents, who are interested in supporting the University and its mission through your philanthropy. We are fortunate to have an extraordinarily generous parent, grandparent, and family member community, who help to create and expand the culture of excellence that defines our university. For any donor, but especially parents of current students, this partnership can make your relationship with Georgetown even more meaningful, as you enhance the experience of Georgetown for your child.

I also have the privilege of serving as the senior university liaison to our Parents Leadership Council (PLC), which comprises families whose annual giving exceeds $25,000. Council members engage with each other and with other parents to build relationships with the University, providing Georgetown with invaluable leadership and service.

I am clearly and unavoidably biased. I am a person of Georgetown. So you’ll take this with a grain of salt… but I believe that Georgetown is a very special place, a distinctive community, that is first and always an institution of outstanding academic rigor and commitment. But it is also a place firmly rooted, deeply embedded in the values and principles of the nation’s oldest Jesuit institution, which compel us to think about how our gifts and opportunities, our resources and ambitions can be made to serve others and make the world a better place. Your family’s active involvement, both on campus and in your communities—in addition to your philanthropic support, at whatever level is comfortable—bolsters and enhances the experience of every member of our Hoya family. The impact will be felt by your children and their peers, both now and in the future, when they reflect on their Georgetown experience.

Once again, welcome to Georgetown.

Bart Moore

Supporting Georgetown

Through their generous support, Georgetown families help create and expand the culture of excellence that defines our university. Each year, philanthropy from our parent community supports scholarships, academic units, intercollegiate athletics, service initiatives, student affairs and so much more.

In the 2022-2023 Fiscal Year, Georgetown received $54.0M in gifts from 3,917 parent households, including $15.9M from non-alumni parents. Parents give back through annual gifts, and multi-year commitments, designed to best meet the family’s philanthropic goals and directly benefiting thousands of Hoyas every day, enabling them to make a difference in their communities and around the world.

Many families involve students in their philanthropic decisions, to help in establishing a meaningful tradition of giving back. Upon stepping foot on campus, your student can begin to learn and understand what has been made possible at the university through philanthropy, celebrating and fostering the tradition of giving back among their peers. The 1634 Society and the Senior Class Gift Committee are two wonderful ways to begin to learn, understand and cultivate support for Georgetown and the tradition of supporting this community.

Coinciding with graduation, many parents and families also choose to recognize their students’ significant milestone moment through a capstone commitment or outright gift in honor of. These gifts can be made to an existing fund or can create a named fund that the family or student can continue to contribute to for generations to come, establishing a legacy of support and impact at Georgetown.

From the Annual Fund

Annual gifts enable Georgetown to deliver daily on the mission to educate individuals to be reflective lifelong learners, responsible and active participants in civic life, and to live generously in service to others. Relying on the collective engagement and commitment of alumni, family, and friends, annual gifts consist of many specific giving options that encompass initiatives and programs for and within each campus and can be designated to the part of Georgetown that means the most to each donor.

Major Gifts

The future of Georgetown University depends on the generous support of family and friends as well as alumni. Major gifts allow the university to promote excellence; attract and retain the most deserving students; recruit and support world-class faculty and researchers; and enhance and broaden Georgetown’s research, education, and outreach programs.

Endowed scholarships, gifts to support capital projects, gifts of securities, and memorial gifts to honor loved ones are all ways to support the Georgetown experience.

  • Parents Leadership Council

The Parents Leadership Council (PLC) is composed of approximately 50 of Georgetown’s most engaged families, who serve the institution through meaningful philanthropy and volunteerism. The PLC is an advisory and advocacy group, fostering a sense of community among parents of Georgetown students, and serving as thought partners with university leadership. The PLC meets twice a year on campus, building a strong network with each other and closely connecting with pan-campus partners. PLC families often also further the mission of Georgetown in their respective communities through hosting events, making welcome calls to new families and participating in professional development opportunities for students. Council members champion and move forward Georgetown’s priorities through leadership giving. PLC families begin a strong relationship of giving to Georgetown—while their children are on campus and beyond—to form long-lasting Georgetown legacies to endure for generations.

  • McDonough School of Business Parents Advisory Council

Georgetown in Your Hometown

University events are held across the United States and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend regional Georgetown Club events.

Each summer, Georgetown parents and alumni host student send-off events for our incoming freshmen and transfer students. Last year, we held events in 39 cities across the globe with over 1,200 students and family attendees. These events are an opportunity for students to interact with future classmates and meet local alumni and current parents who readily share their experiences from Georgetown and answer questions.
